Here’s our second installment of “Shooters You’re Likely To See in the NCAA Tournament,” this time numbers 11-15, but in reverse.

15. ISAIAH CANAAN (Murray St, 6-foot-1, Senior)

66-of-171 from 3-point range (39 percent)
Average 3-pointers per game: 2.9

What You Need To Know: A strong, rangy guard with a nasty step-back jumper, Isaiah’s a three-year starter. And although he’s leading the Ohio Valley Conference at 21 ppg, he’s actually an even better shooter than he’s shown this year — he shot 46 percent last season and 48 percent as a freshman. He also loves dunking, but we can forgive that in this particular instance.

Game of the Year: He shot 6-of-11 from long range for a cool 32 points against Lipscomb, which is also a good thing to own if you have a mustache. (more…)

COLLEGE ROUNDUP

This was one of the craziest weeks in one of the craziest college hoops seasons we have seen in years. Here’s the best and worst of the week that was, and a primer on who’s rising and who’s sinking. See if you can follow the bouncing ball:

Game of the week: Notre Dame 104, Louisville 101 (5 OT). Is it even close? This game was a snoozer for 39 minutes – until Notre Dame guard Jerian Grant decided to score 12 points in the last 45 seconds to send it into overtime. The unlikely hero for Notre Dame was 6-10 center Garrick Sherman, a transfer from Michigan State who did not play a minute of regulation, but who had 17 points and six rebounds in the five extra sessions to give the Irish the win. Apologies to those of who came to this blog expecting to find shirtless jpegs of Ernie Johnson. We’re The Kingsbury Factor, a blog dedicated to finding, documenting and desperately LinkedIn-ing the best 3-point shooters in college basketball. See what we’re all about at TheKingsburyFactor.com, and if you enjoy developing deep, lasting Internet friendships, give us a little follow at @KingsburyFactor.

During the course of the next two fortnights, we’ll be here on Barkley’s Backboard counting down the top 20 best shooters in college basketball you’re likely to see in the NCAA Tournament. This last part is important, so we italicized it. With apologies to Oakland’s Travis Bader and North Florida’s Parker Smith and anyone who plays for 0-20 Grambling State — even if you’re making 20 3s a night, and the net literally burns off NBA JAM-style every time you shoot — you’re not making this list if your team doesn’t have a realistic shot at making The Dance. We’re sorry. It’s not you, it’s your crappy, crappy team.

Anyway, now that all the caveats that our friend who’s dating a lawyer made us say are out of the way, we’re counting down, Casey Kasem-style, 20 to 1 – starting with Nos. 20-16: (more…)

The Super Bowl is over. January has turned to February. You know what that means:

The best month of them all is almost here.

The Round Mound of Rebound… Sir Charles… Chuck… No matter the nickname you prefer, Charles Barkley’s playing and television career has spawned dozens of great quotes, commentary, and hilarious moments. To honor one of the greatest power forwards of all-time and look forward to his coverage of March Madness, we will pay homage to several of his best catch phrases in this weekly installment reviewing some of the top anecdotes and stories from around the game of college basketball, What Would Charles Say?

Let Me Tell You Something… The Final Four is set, and to say that we’re thrilled with the matchups would be an understatement. Kentucky, Kansas, Louisville and Ohio State are four of the most regal programs in the sport, collectively boasting 13 national championships and 49 Final Four appearances. What’s more is that all four of these teams this year would make for worthy national champions — each team has already won 30 or more games, each is led by an outstanding coach, and each has legitimate NBA talent up and down the roster. Oh, and one of the semifinal games — we won’t tell you which one — just happens to represent one of the bitterest rivalries in the entire sport. The last time a Final Four was this star-studded was 2008 (with Kansas, Memphis, UCLA, and North Carolina), and you certainly remember how that one ended — with KU’s Mario Chalmers hitting a massive 3 to send the game to overtime (where the Jayhawks eventually won the game). It wouldn’t surprise us to see a similar ending like that one in Monday night’s championship game. (more…)

Let Me Tell You Something… Everyone loves March Madness, and with good reason. Nowhere else do you find such consistently compelling storylines in sports year after year after year. Whether it’s David over Goliath — Lehigh, really? — or a proud program finding its way after a long drought — welcome back, Indiana — the NCAA Tournament’s first weekend provides something for everyone. As Charles Barkley noted in our interview with him last week, the best team doesn’t always win the Tournament. But most years, frankly, it’s rather tough to figure who the “best” team is anyway — right now, among a group of UNC, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, Kansas, and Syracuse, you might get six different opinions as to which team is the best one. The one thing that can without question be stated, though, is that whoever is left standing after six increasingly tougher games in March and early April has more than earned the national championship. The college football folks can have their polls and computer ratings to determine who their “best” teams are; we’ll take our head-to-head matchups every single time instead. (more…)
