The Round Mound of Rebound… Sir Charles… Chuck… No matter the nickname you prefer, Charles Barkley’s playing and television career has spawned dozens of great quotes, commentary, and hilarious moments. To honor one of the greatest power forwards of all-time and look forward to his coverage of March Madness, we will pay homage to several of his best catch phrases in this weekly installment reviewing some of the top anecdotes and stories from around the game of college basketball, What Would Charles Say?

Let Me Tell You Something… Everyone loves March Madness, and with good reason. Nowhere else do you find such consistently compelling storylines in sports year after year after year. Whether it’s David over Goliath — Lehigh, really? — or a proud program finding its way after a long drought — welcome back, Indiana — the NCAA Tournament’s first weekend provides something for everyone. As Charles Barkley noted in our interview with him last week, the best team doesn’t always win the Tournament. But most years, frankly, it’s rather tough to figure who the “best” team is anyway — right now, among a group of UNC, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, Kansas, and Syracuse, you might get six different opinions as to which team is the best one. The one thing that can without question be stated, though, is that whoever is left standing after six increasingly tougher games in March and early April has more than earned the national championship. The college football folks can have their polls and computer ratings to determine who their “best” teams are; we’ll take our head-to-head matchups every single time instead. (more…)

Let Me Tell You Something: The NCAA’s First Four has taken a lot of heat in its first two years for not being part of the “real” NCAA Tournament, but Tuesday night’s games between Western Kentucky-Mississippi Valley State and BYU-Iona were such compelling theater that it served as a reminder that March basketball is really fun no matter what you call it. In the opener between two No. 16 seeds, Western Kentucky, with its shiny new head coach Ray Harper, stormed back from 16 points down in the final five minutes of the game to win by a single point in front of President Barack Obama and the Prime Minister of Great Britain, David Cameron. In the follow-up game, Iona ran out to a 25-point lead in the first half before the Cougars, behind the fantastic play of Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies, completed the biggest NCAA Tournament comeback in history to win by six points. It was an exhilarating set of games, and a bold reminder — March Madness is here! (more…)

Pulling Their Weight … Quite literally. At the Pac-12 Tournament this week, UCLA center and notable member of the 300-pound club, Joshua Smith, was suspended for the first half of his team’s game against USC for missing the team bus to the Staples Center. Why is this interesting? Since the team was staying only a couple of blocks from the arena, Smith joined a team manager in walking over to the locker room to wait for the rest of the squad to arrive. In other words, a player with a known weight problem got some fresh air and a little exercise, still beat his team to the arena, and somehow ended up in trouble. Does this make any sense whatsoever? Are you really late if you beat everyone else to the destination? Whatever the case, it turned out not to hurt the Bruins, as UCLA ran away with the victory, 55-40. (more…)
